Where the credential is checked decides everything

The entry method printed on the box matters less than where the lock verifies it. A PIN typed on a keypad or a finger placed on a sensor is handled at the door. The phone-based methods are different in kind: the Schlage’s Apple Home Key, the igloohome’s Bluetooth key, and remote unlock on every WiFi model all need a phone, an app, or a live connection somewhere in the chain.

Only two manufacturers say the important part out loud. Ultraloq states the U-Bolt Pro “works offline with fingerprint/keypad; remote features require internet.” igloohome states the Deadbolt 2S “does not require an internet connection” and runs on a permanent master PIN plus time-limited algoPIN codes entered on the keypad. Lockly goes partway, publishing a free allowance of up to three offline access codes per month that work with no WiFi at all. Schlage documents keypad entry with 100 stored codes and Home Key tap without opening an app, and Yale and Kwikset state the app is used to enroll credentials but is not needed to unlock. None of those three publishes a statement about behavior when the property’s internet is down, and the honest reading is unverified, not assumed.

Measure the door before you choose an entry method

Thickness is the figure to check first. The Kwikset Halo Touch starts at 1-3/4 in (44 mm) and tops out at 2 in, and Kwikset’s own support material says it does not fit a 1-3/8 in door without asking Kwikset about a kit. Every other replacement deadbolt in this set starts at 1-3/8 in.

At the thick end the spread is wide. The Yale reaches 2-1/4 in and the igloohome 60 mm, about 2-3/8 in, both without a kit and within an eighth of an inch of each other. The Schlage reaches 2-1/2 in only with its optional thick door kit. The Lockly goes to 3-5/32 in (80 mm) with an extension kit, the widest range published here. The igloohome carries one further restriction: its listing covers wooden swing doors only, and nothing retrieved confirms fit on a metal or fiberglass door.

The Aqara U200 is a different kind of purchase. It installs over the existing deadbolt or Euro cylinder rather than replacing it, so thickness ranges do not apply. Instead, Aqara lists self-locking locks, rim locks, gate locks, and some older cylinder types as incompatible, and the original key keeps working from outside only if the cylinder has what Aqara calls an emergency function.

Battery figures are not comparable until you read the footnote

Seven of the eight run on four AA batteries, and Aqara offers four AA as an alternative to its rechargeable 7.4 V pack. What differs is how each manufacturer quotes life. Ultraloq is the only one that publishes a WiFi-specific range and splits it by chemistry: 3 to 6 months up to a year on alkaline, up to a year on lithium. Schlage quotes up to 6 months of typical use and Lockly up to 5 months for regular use. The Kwikset SmartCode 270 is quoted at at least 12 months and the igloohome at up to 1 year, and neither has built-in WiFi. Aqara ties its 6-month figure to roughly 8 unlocks a day, and its keypad draws from a separate set of four AAA batteries or from 12 to 24 V wired power, so there are two things to keep charged or stocked rather than one.

Yale and the Kwikset Halo Touch publish a battery type and no duration at all. Its absence is why both score low on the battery factor.

The Halo Touch lists a low-battery indicator. No retrieved material for any product describes a remote low-battery alert, so do not plan a maintenance schedule around receiving one.

Remote management: WiFi built in, WiFi added, or no WiFi at all

The Schlage, the Lockly, the Kwikset Halo Touch, this Yale SKU, and this Ultraloq SKU all connect directly to a WiFi network with no bridge. Schlage, Yale, Ultraloq, and Lockly each specify the 2.4 GHz band; Kwikset’s Halo Touch material says only that it connects to home WiFi.

Yale’s Bluetooth-only Assure Lock 2 needs an Apple TV, a HomePod, or a separately purchased Yale WiFi module for remote access, and the Bluetooth-only U-Bolt Pro needs a separately purchased WiFi adaptor. The product name does not tell you which one is in the cart. The model code does: YRD450-F-WF1-619 for the Yale WiFi fingerprint model, and the U-Bolt Pro WiFi listing with door sensor for Ultraloq.

The Aqara U200 uses Matter over Thread, so remote code changes require a Thread border router or a compatible hub such as Apple Home or SmartThings.

The igloohome sits in its own category. Its algoPIN codes are generated in the app as time-limited PINs, and the lock and the phone never have to be online or near each other. That covers issuing a code to a contractor from another state. What it does not cover is live lock and unlock or push notifications, which need the separately sold WiFi Bridge Unit. And the SmartCode 270 has no remote path at all: every code is added or deleted standing at the touchpad.

When the keypad-only lock is enough

The SmartCode 270’s battery guidance is among the longest published here. It carries an ANSI Grade 2 rating with a 20-minute UL time rating, and SmartKey lets the cylinder be re-keyed to a different KW1 key without removing the lock, so the physical key can be changed between tenants along with the code. If you live near the property, turnover is infrequent, and you are willing to change codes at the door, it removes every dependency the connected locks introduce.

It is not enough when you cannot get to the door. A departing tenant’s code stays live until someone stands at the keypad.

Details you will not think to ask about

Security grades come from two different systems, and a letter and a number are not the same scale. Schlage cites Grade AAA under ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2015 and separately Commercial Grade 1 under A156.36. Kwikset’s Halo Touch cites Grade AAA without naming the standard in the material retrieved. Ultraloq says “designed to meet ANSI Grade 1,” which is a design claim rather than a stated certification. Yale, Lockly, igloohome, and the SmartCode 270 cite Grade 2. Aqara publishes no grade. Read the standard before comparing two grades.

Auto-lock is not universal, and for a rental where guests leave without locking behind them it deserves its own check. Schlage’s is adjustable or can be disabled. Yale’s DoorSense senses whether the door is actually closed before confirming it locked. Lockly has a programmable timer, igloohome auto-relocks with a manual override, and Aqara uses a built-in gyroscope to detect the door closing. Ultraloq offers it on the WiFi and Z-Wave models only, not the Bluetooth-only one. Kwikset does not mention auto-lock for either the SmartCode 270 or the Halo Touch in the documents retrieved.

A few documented features are specific to one lock. The Schlage publishes a built-in alarm: a 90-decibel steady alarm for 3 minutes on forced entry, or a quieter door-movement beep, with sensitivity set in the app, and its keypad disables temporarily after four consecutive wrong codes. Lockly’s PIN Genie keypad randomizes the number positions on each use to prevent smudge-pattern guessing of the code. Aqara publishes a Quiet Unlock Mode with slower, quieter motor operation.

Warranty terms spread widely. Schlage publishes limited lifetime mechanical and finish coverage with 3 years on electronics. Lockly publishes 5 years mechanical and finish with 2 years on electronics. Ultraloq publishes lifetime mechanical with 18 months on electronics. igloohome publishes 1 year outside the EU. Yale, Kwikset, and Aqara warranty terms were not in the material retrieved.

Weather ratings are published for some and not others: IP65 for the Ultraloq, Lockly, and igloohome, IPx5 for the Yale, and IPX5 for the Aqara keypad. Operating temperature ranges are published for the Ultraloq (-22°F to 149°F), the Yale (-22°F to 140°F), and the Aqara (-4°F to 151°F). Schlage and Kwikset publish neither figure in the documents retrieved.
