Coverage is the number that maps onto your floor
A pint rating describes how much water a unit removes in 24 hours under a test condition. A coverage figure is the manufacturer’s own translation of that rate into floor area, and it is the one you can hold against a tape measure. The spread across these six is wider than the pint numbers suggest. The AlorAir Sentinel HD35P is published at up to 1,000 sq ft and the Midea Cube 20-pint at up to 1,500 sq ft. The Vremi 35-pint claims up to 3,000 sq ft. Frigidaire publishes no coverage figure for the FFAD5033W1 at all, which is a real gap in a purchase that is entirely about fitting a unit to a footprint.
Two of these units carry the same 35-pint headline and differ by 2,000 sq ft in claimed coverage. That is the clearest evidence that coverage describes an assumed room, not a measured machine.
Raw pint numbers do not compare across brands
Two picks here handle that well. The Vremi 35-pint is listed at 35 pints/day alongside a 50-pint 2012 DOE figure, so both readings of the same machine sit side by side. The AlorAir HD35P does it with conditions rather than standard names: 35 pints/day at AHAM’s 65°F and 60% RH, and 70 pints/day at 90°F and 90% saturation. Same unit, double the number, because the second figure is measured in a much wetter, warmer room. The Midea Cube models, the Frigidaire, and the Danby each publish a single figure without naming the protocol behind it in the material available. Those numbers are not wrong — they simply cannot be lined up against a rival’s number and used to draw a conclusion.
The drain path quietly decides the shortlist
Basement and crawlspace units run for days without supervision, so drainage is not a convenience feature. Without continuous drainage a unit fills its bucket and shuts off, and everything after that point is theoretical.
Gravity drainage moves water downhill only. It needs a floor drain physically below the outlet, which is exactly what finished basements and crawlspaces frequently lack. Only the AlorAir publishes a built-in pump; the other five document gravity or continuous drain connections only — the Midea Cube 50-pint and 20-pint (both include a hose), the Frigidaire FFAD5033W1 (hose connection documented in the manual), the Danby DDR070BDWDB (direct drain with automatic shutoff), and the Vremi 35-pint, whose hose is not included with purchase.
If the rise from the install spot to the nearest drain is more than zero, most of the pint ratings on your list stop being relevant, and the AlorAir’s 1,000 sq ft coverage ceiling becomes the constraint you have to design around — one unit per zone rather than one unit per level.
Bucket size against daily removal
If you are not plumbing the unit in, work out the ratio yourself. The Midea Cube 20-pint holds 3.2 gallons in its nested tank — about 25.6 pints — against a 20 pints/day rating, so it clears a full day at rated output. The Midea Cube 50-pint holds 7.51 gallons in extended form, roughly 60 pints, against 50 pints/day. The Vremi 35-pint holds 1.6 gallons, about 12.8 pints, against 35 pints/day: more than two trips down the stairs a day if it ever runs at its rating. Frigidaire, Danby, and AlorAir do not publish bucket capacity, so the calculation is unavailable for them before purchase. For the AlorAir that hardly matters, since a unit built around a pump is meant to run permanently drained. For the two consoles it is a genuine blind spot.
Cold rooms need a number, not an adjective
Cool spaces are where marketing language and specification diverge most. The AlorAir publishes an operating range of 33.8°F to 110°F and names Automatic Defrost as a feature. The Danby publishes a floor of 41°F (5°C), and adds a Smart Dehumidify function that factors ambient temperature into its control. Frigidaire names “low-temperature operation” for the FFAD5033W1 but publishes no minimum in °F, which is precisely the case where a named feature cannot be checked. Neither Midea Cube publishes a minimum operating temperature. For a heated basement that gap may not decide anything. For an unheated crawlspace it decides everything, and only one pick here publishes both a floor and a named defrost.
Clearance, and what a missing dimension costs you
Crawlspaces cap height, and consoles are tall. The Vremi stands 24.3 in and the Frigidaire 24.25 in — upright room units with a narrow footprint (11.6 in and 12.19 in deep respectively). The two Midea consoles are squatter: 14.57 in and 13.39 in tall. The AlorAir is 15.2 x 11.2 x 11.4 in at 39.7 lbs and is sold for crawlspace and basement installation rather than portable placement, which comes with different service and drainage expectations than a console you wheel into a corner.
Danby publishes neither dimensions nor weight for the DDR070BDWDB, so you cannot confirm it will turn a stair landing or sit in the alcove you had in mind. Danby’s own product page also lists the model as discontinued. A discontinued unit can still be a sound purchase on published specification while stock lasts, but you are accepting whatever the manufacturer’s long-term parts and support position turns out to be, and you cannot check the fit in advance. Weigh that against what the model gives you: the highest published removal rate here and the joint-highest coverage claim.
When the smaller unit is genuinely enough
The 20-pint tier gets shortlisted for spaces it is not rated to cover. On published figures it is a room-scale machine: 1,500 sq ft coverage, 20 pints/day, 262 W at 50% RH — the only specific power draw published in this set. That suits one damp room, a utility area, or a small basement zone. It does not suit an open lower level, and no amount of runtime converts a 1,500 sq ft claim into 3,000 sq ft of coverage.
The honest middle is the Vremi at 3,000 sq ft, provided you buy a hose and have somewhere below the unit for it to go. The step up to a 4,500 sq ft claim earns its place when the level is large, open, or wetter than a coverage number assumes — and that last condition is the one no specification sheet will confirm for you.
