Start with what is actually in the box

Of the seven cameras compared here, five ship with a second camera and two do not. VIOFO’s A229 Pro and A229 Plus, the Thinkware U3000 PRO bundle and the BlackVue Elite 10 2CH each include a front and a rear unit; the 70mai T800 includes a third, an interior cabin camera. Nextbase publishes 1080p at 30fps for the 622GW’s optional rear module; no resolution is published for the 522GW’s.

So the first question is not 1440p or 4K. It is whether the listing in front of you contains one camera or two, because a platform that supports a rear module and a package that contains one are different products with similar names.

The rear channel is where the specification usually steps down

Assume both cameras match and you will usually be wrong. The A229 Pro records 3840x2160 in front and 2560x1440 behind: 1440p is about 3.7 megapixels against 4K’s 8.3, so the rear frame carries roughly 44 percent of the front frame’s pixel count. The U3000 PRO does the same thing with the same silicon — Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 in front, IMX675 behind, 4K front and 1440p rear.

Two products here hold 4K on both channels: the Elite 10 and the T800. The Elite 10 pays for it elsewhere. Its own spec sheet lists HDR for the front camera and “not available” for the rear, so the rear channel is 4K without HDR, while the T800 states 3-Channel HDR covering front, rear and interior. That is the real fork at the top of this group: the Elite 10 gives you pixels on the rear, the T800 gives you pixels and HDR, and the A229 Pro gives you HDR on a rear channel with fewer pixels.

The A229 Plus takes a third route. The same IMX675 at 1440p on both channels, HDR on both, F1.8 in front and F1.9 behind. Nothing is downgraded relative to anything else in the package, but nothing reaches 4K either.

If the incident you most want recorded is someone hitting you from behind, that asymmetry is the whole decision. If the rear camera exists to record lane changes and parking-lot contact, 1440p on both channels is a coherent choice rather than a compromise.

Resolution, sensor and aperture are three separate published figures

Night detail depends on how many pixels the sensor writes, what the sensor is, and how much light the lens admits. Manufacturers publish those three separately, and in this group they do not move together.

Resolution: 4K front on the A229 Pro, U3000 PRO, Elite 10, T800 and 622GW; 1440p on the A229 Plus and 522GW.

Sensor: VIOFO, Thinkware and 70mai all name Sony STARVIS 2 model numbers — IMX678 (8MP front on the A229 Pro, 8.4MP on the U3000 PRO, front and rear on the T800) and IMX675 (5MP class). Nextbase publishes a 5.49M Pixel (2592 x 1944) front image sensor for the 622GW but no brand or model, and lists the 522GW’s as a Nextbase-branded 5.14MP 1/3-inch part.

That last pairing is the clearest illustration in the group. The U3000 PRO’s rear sensor is a Sony IMX675 at 5.14MP. The 522GW’s front sensor is 5.14MP. Identical megapixel counts, one a named part in a documented low-light line and the other a house-branded sensor with no comparable published lineage. A megapixel figure on its own tells you very little about which one you would rather have after dark.

Aperture: F1.3 on both Nextbase models, the lowest f-number published here; F1.7 on the Elite 10 and the T800; F1.8 on both VIOFO fronts, with F1.9 rears. Thinkware publishes no f-stop for either camera on the pages retrieved, so on an otherwise thoroughly documented system the one specification governing light per unit of time cannot be checked.

The uncomfortable pattern is worth naming: the two widest-aperture cameras here are also the two that name no Sony sensor and include no second camera.

HDR is specified per channel, not per product

All seven publish HDR on the front camera. Thinkware states dual HDR front and rear and notes that front HDR applies in its 4K driving mode, but nothing in the retrieved specifications says whether it applies in the 2560x1440 60fps mode. VIOFO’s A229 Plus reaches 60fps at 1440p only with HDR disabled — the same kind of trade in a different place, where frame rate and HDR are alternatives rather than additions.

Modes and field of view you may not think to check

The 622GW is the only camera here publishing a 1080p 120fps mode alongside 4K at 30fps and 1440p at 60fps. The U3000 PRO publishes 4K at 30fps or 1440p at 60fps. Most of the rest state a single 30fps mode per channel.

Field of view is quoted as diagonal degrees and varies more than the marketing suggests: 140° front on both VIOFOs and both Nextbase models, 146° on the Elite 10 (125° horizontal, 68° vertical) and the T800, and 147° on the U3000 PRO front. Rear lenses are generally wider — 160° on both VIOFO rears and 156° on the Thinkware rear — while the Elite 10 lists the same 146° on both cameras.

Storage, codecs and what actually fills a card

Published card ceilings differ by a factor of eight across this group. The Elite 10 supports up to 1TB, the highest published here. The A229 Pro, A229 Plus and U3000 PRO support up to 512GB, and the T800 lists 32GB to 512GB. The 622GW’s manual lists 128GB as the maximum tested card size, and the 522GW’s recording-time estimates are published for 32, 64 and 128GB cards.

How fast a card fills depends on bitrate and codec, and most of these makers publish neither. Thinkware names H.265 HEVC. BlackVue lists H.265 and H.264. 70mai states 4K on two channels with no codec or bitrate figure at all, so there is no published basis for estimating its file sizes. No bitrate appears in the specifications retrieved for any of the seven, which means “will 4K fill my card faster” cannot be answered from spec sheets — only the ceiling can be compared.

One card-related feature is published by exactly one maker: BlackVue’s Adaptive Format-Free loop recording, a patented method (US 10,922,270 B2) that avoids periodic card reformatting.

Matching this to your situation

Strongest published rear evidence: the Elite 10 or the T800, both recording 4K behind the car. Choose between them on HDR, which the T800 states for all three channels and the Elite 10’s sheet lists as not available on the rear.

Rideshare or delivery work where the cabin matters: the T800 is the only product here that includes an interior camera, at 1920x1080 30fps with a 147° field of view and low-profile infrared.

Most concerned about the parked car: the U3000 PRO publishes dual built-in radar sensors for parking-mode motion detection plus energy-saving and time-lapse modes, and no other model here publishes radar. The 522GW publishes an Intelligent Parking Mode that activates after five minutes stationary.

Only the road ahead: the 622GW records 4K at 30fps at F1.3 with HDR. Its trade is a front sensor you cannot look up, and a rear module that would record 1080p — below every rear camera included in the box elsewhere in this group.

Fewest unpublished variables: the two VIOFOs name every figure discussed above — front and rear resolution, sensor model per channel, aperture per channel, HDR per channel, card ceiling — and publish an 18-month warranty, the only warranty term found for any product here.

Where the evidence runs out

Power arrangement is published for three of these: both VIOFOs run on a supercapacitor with no battery, and the T800 pairs a supercapacitor with a button cell. Nothing retrieved states the arrangement for the others. Branded low-light processing — Thinkware’s Super Night Vision 4.0, 70mai’s Night Owl Vision and Lumi Vision — carries no published figure behind the name, so there is nothing to compare between them.

And no manufacturer here publishes a plate-legibility distance, which is the number a buyer actually wants.
