The drain decides this more than the ice rate
Most home bar plans start with a production number and stall on a drain. The GE and Whynter publish no permanent drain — GE’s manual describes rear hoses used only to empty the unit into a bucket or sink, and Whynter’s manual describes a side-mounted plug for draining the reservoir — and no drain arrangement is published for the Frigidaire in the listing retrieved for this guide. All three fill by hand — Whynter’s reservoir holds about 2.2 quarts (2.1 L) — and all three unplug and move.
For the built-ins, the drain is a construction decision made before the cabinet is closed. Newair’s NCI066SSN0 uses a pump drain rather than gravity, but publishes no lift height, and no Newair-published installation manual for it was found for this guide.
So the measurement that settles the category is vertical, not volumetric. Find where the machine’s drain tube will sit, then find the nearest existing drain. Lower, and a gravity SKU works with no pump in the system. Higher, or across the room, and you need a pump model plus a published lift figure to check it against — Scotsman gives one, Newair does not, and Ice-O-Matic’s drain arrangement is not documented in anything retrieved here.
Bin capacity is what a party feels; production is what the next morning feels
Daily output is the headline and the wrong number to optimize for a bar, because ice at a party is drawn in a burst and what absorbs a burst is the bin.
The countertop units hold roughly one ice bucket’s worth and then feed you at their production rate, while the Scotsman holds around eight times what any of them do.
If a countertop unit is your answer, the fix is scheduling rather than capacity. The Frigidaire listing states 10-15 minutes to first ice and GE’s manual states 10 minutes or less, so you start the machine hours early and decant into a cooler as the bin fills.
Fitting it: 15 inches wide is the easy part
Built-in widths cluster where you would expect — 14 7/8 in for the Scotsman and Ice-O-Matic, 15.0 in for the Newair. Depth is where existing cabinetry decides for you: 17.9 in for the Newair, 22 in for the Scotsman, 23 5/8 in for the Ice-O-Matic, close to 6 in of spread. Heights run 33.1 in for the Newair and 33 3/8 in for the Ice-O-Matic, with the Scotsman published as leg-adjustable from 33 3/8 to 34 3/8 in, the only one of the three with adjustment published.
Countertop height is the spec people skip and then discover. Whynter’s unit is 10.25 in tall and 12 in deep; GE’s is 16.5 in tall; Frigidaire’s is 20.25 in. Under a wall cabinet that 10 in spread is the whole decision, and it inverts on width — Whynter is the widest of the three at 15 in, Frigidaire the narrowest at 11.75 in. No air-clearance requirement is published for any of the three countertop units in the specifications retrieved here, so leave room behind them anyway: GE’s manual puts an air filter on the rear and asks for it to be checked at least every 2 months, which is awkward if the unit is pushed against a backsplash.
The second production number, and what it says about a warm room
Two picks publish output at more than one condition. GE states 38 lb/day at 70°F ambient with 60°F water and 32 lb/day at 90°F ambient with 70°F water under the DOE test method, a drop of about 16%. Ice-O-Matic states 85 lb/day at 70°F air with 50°F water and 60 lb/day at 90°F air with 70°F water, a drop of about 29%. Frigidaire’s 44 lb/day, Whynter’s 40 lb/day and Newair’s 66 lb/day are single figures with no stated test conditions, and Scotsman’s 110 lb/day comes from a retailer listing rather than the manual, which states bin capacity and fill time instead.
Ambient limits are published for the built-ins: 50-109°F for the Newair, 50-100°F for the Scotsman with best performance stated at 60-80°F. Those are operating ranges, not outdoor ratings.
Refrigerant, circuits and the outlet nobody budgeted
Scotsman’s machine uses R290, and the manual is specific about what follows: installation per ANSI/ASHRAE 15, no installation near open ignition sources, and decommissioning restricted to technicians certified for R290. Ice-O-Matic publishes R290A. Treat the installing manufacturer’s instructions as the requirement.
Scotsman requires a dedicated 115V, 60Hz, 15A circuit and states it must be the only device on that circuit. Whynter draws 145W (2.3A) and GE states 3.0A at 120V. Ice-O-Matic is cord-and-plug on a NEMA 5-15P at 115V; Newair is 110-120V, 226W. A bar cabinet sharing one outlet is a different project once a dedicated circuit enters the plan.
How much documentation you are buying
This set divides on evidence as sharply as it does on plumbing. GE, Whynter and Scotsman all have manufacturer manuals behind their figures — Scotsman’s goes as far as an internal altitude-adjustment screw for installations above 6,000 ft. Newair’s numbers come from its own product page, Ice-O-Matic’s from its product page plus a retailer listing for dimensions and weight, and Frigidaire’s entirely from retailer product copy, with no Frigidaire-hosted manual or spec sheet for the EFIC255 found for this guide.
Warranty follows a similar pattern: GE, Frigidaire and Whynter each state one year, Newair states two years alongside ETL/cETL listing and FDA-tested components, and no warranty term was found for the Scotsman or Ice-O-Matic in the sources retrieved. Ice-O-Matic does name three features on its own page — load monitoring that shuts down the gearbox, a water sensor, and non-contact ice detection for automatic shutoff.
When a countertop unit is genuinely enough
It is enough when there is no water line in the wall, the cabinets are already built, and ice is served in bursts you can bank ahead.
It stops being enough at two points. The first is hand-filling — every countertop pick here runs from a manually filled reservoir, and GE’s answer is an optional non-plumbed side tank rather than a connection, while Newair connects directly to water and drain and still carries a 0.85 QT (0.8 L) internal tank. The second is the bin. If you want ice waiting rather than ice arriving, a countertop bin does not do it, and no amount of daily production changes that at the moment the guests walk in.
Two gaps run across the whole set. Only Newair publishes a noise figure, so for an open-plan room the other five give you nothing manufacturer-verified to compare. And none of the six publishes a refrigerated bin or a hold-time figure for standing ice — GE’s rear hoses and Whynter’s side plug exist to empty the machine, which tells you what the manufacturers expect you to do with water that never gets used.
